About 50 persons learned more about the people who shaped Greene County in its early years, and the people residents like to boast about, at a historic plaque tour last Sunday hosted by the Greene County Historical Society and Jefferson Matters: Main Street.
Volunteers in costumes, some of them borrowed from the Historical Society, were near the informative plaques around the courthouse square. The volunteers expanded on that information in first person.
Of the 11 plaques, two of the subjects are not people. Amy Roberts dressed as the Scranton water tower, and Alan Robinson dressed in a vintage suit to talk about the Lincoln Highway. Floyd and Dora Mahanay are not featured on a plaque, but Don and Bonnie Orris dressed as the Mahanays and stood in the shadow of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower.
Others providing information were Guy Richardson as Guy C. Richardson, Don Van Gilder as Mahlon Head, Curt Nelson as Albert Head, Jean Van Gilder as Dr Augusta Grimmell, Darren Jackson as Dr George Grimmell, Rob Hoyt as George Gallup, Nicole Friess Schilling as Eva Leonard and Dick Bardole as Robert Montgomery Rippey. One of the plaques features the Friday Club. Rose Olhausen portrayed Mrs. E.B. Stillman and LeeAnn Monaghan portrayed Mrs. E.E. Gallup, both members of the Friday Club.
A donation was accepted at the end of the tour, with proceeds going toward another historic plaque.
